    TL;DR

    • Motorola has announced new Moto AI features for its phones at the Lenovo Tech World 2024 conference.
    • The AI will soon let users perform tasks like ordering coffee or requesting rides using natural language commands.
    • Additional features, such as “Catch Me Up,” “Pay Attention,” and “Remember This,” will provide summaries of communications, help recall conversation details, and capture live moments, respectively.

At the Lenovo Tech World 2024 conference, Motorola announced several upcoming AI features for its phones. The company is rolling out a new suite of features, known as Moto AI, designed to enhance user interaction and provide personalized assistance.

Moto AI was first introduced at the 2023 Lenovo Tech World conference. At the time, Motorola had just begun developing the AI assistant. In June of this year, the company partnered with Google to launch two Moto AI features for the Razr 2024 family: Moto Magic Canvas and Style Sync. Moto Magic Canvas is a cloud-based image generator that creates AI-generated pictures from text commands, while Style Sync is an AI wallpaper creator.

Now, Motorola has showcased some more Moto AI features that will be coming to its phones as part of an invite-only beta program later this year.

Moto AI is powered by Large Action Models (LAM), which enable the device to understand the user’s environment and allow users to communicate using natural language. Soon, Moto users will be able to say things like “order me an iced americano,” and Moto AI will locate the nearest coffee shop to place the order, notifying the user when it’s ready for pickup. This functionality extends to other everyday tasks, such as requesting rides from Uber, where users can simply state their destination, and the AI handles the rest.

The company says future updates to Moto AI will also automate daily routines, like setting alarms, ordering coffee, and curating music playlists. However, Motorola did not give a time frame for when these AI updates will reach its phones.

    New Moto AI Features 2024

Additional Moto AI tools showcased at the event include the “Catch Me Up” prompt, which summarizes personal communications to save users from scrolling through missed notifications.

The “Pay Attention” feature helps users remember specific details from conversations without the hassle of taking notes. Users will be able to record discussions, which are then transcribed and summarized for easy review.

“Remember This” allows users to capture live moments or on-screen information with just a command. This functionality leverages AI to generate context and details about the captured content, similar to Google’s Pixel Screenshots app. Users will be able to retrieve their memories at any time through simple queries.

As the beta program rolls out, the company says it’s looking forward to incorporating user feedback to refine Moto AI and its capabilities.

  • Storio is helping other businesses unlock more value from solar energy

Storio is helping other businesses unlock more value from solar energy

Meet Storio, a French startup that’s focused on providing smart energy storage for commercial and industrial customers. Founded in 2023, the startup raised a €5 million seed round earlier this year (around $5.5 million at current exchange rates) and has signed its first client.

Storio believes solar panels have a bright future. But the company also wants every solar panel to come with a battery to optimize production. Its target customers are other businesses who may not feel they have the time or expertise to join all these technical pieces themselves.

Instead of building or selling standalone batteries, Storio has a more interesting distribution strategy: after performing a technical and revenue simulation, it partners with battery suppliers and civil engineering companies to turn a project into an energy storage installation.

Over the past few years, many commercial and industrial companies have built large solar panel installations to lower their electricity bills. Storio wants to complement (and tap into) these existing installations by offering an energy storage solution that can enable its customers to optimize their consumption of solar energy — thanks to Storio’s battery management software.

Once batteries are live, Storio remotely manages them to optimize consumption, as well as energy storage and release in general.

Typically, batteries are charged during the day and energy is released in the morning and evening — but Storio’s software allows for smarter stuff like price-conscious energy management.

“That’s the starting point. You have solar panels. Solar panels produce a lot of energy in the middle of the day. Let’s store it, so you can use it yourself and save money,” co-founder and CEO Jean-Yves Stephan told TechCrunch.

Storio’s founders (from L to R: Caroline Le Floch, Jean-Yves Stephan, Gautier Maigret, Julien Dumazert)Image Credits:Storio

For example, Storio can charge batteries from the grid during off-peak hours so that a client doesn’t need to use as much electricity during peak times. As many industrial companies have suffered from expensive energy contracts over the past few years, partnering with Storio is a way to reduce the risks associated with fluctuations in the energy markets.

“The core of our value proposition is to optimize energy flows, either to create savings on our customer’s bill, or to generate additional income from the power grid,” Stephan said.

Storio batteries are also certified in France by Enedis and RTE to contribute to the stabilization of the grid. This means Storio can elect to release energy from the fleet of batteries it manages into the grid for a short period of time when there’s a demand peak — enabling it to generate revenue as a result of this contribution to the grid.

In this case it can even be more lucrative for a Storio customer to release energy from their batteries instead of consuming the energy themselves for their core business purpose.

“Stabilizing the network involves fairly technical mechanisms, such as stabilizing the network frequency. The grid frequency must be 50Hz [in Europe]. As it rises a little above or falls a little below, the battery reacts. It can also be used to buy and sell energy, like an ‘energy trader,’” Stephan added.

The energy trading part is an essential component of the startup’s proposition as it can greatly reduce the time it takes to amortize a Storio installation.

The company estimates a customer can get a return on investment after five or six years — but batteries can last for up to 15 years (when they end up with roughly 70% of their initial capacity).

Storio and each industrial partner that hosts its battery management installation will have a profit-sharing agreement. “It’s very important to align interests because, as you say, we have to make some tradeoffs. If we were saying ‘savings are for you, network revenues are for Storio,’ that would be unfair,” Stephan said.

Lowercarbon Capital is leading Storio’s seed funding round with Bpifrance’s Large Venture fund also acquiring an equity stake in the startup. Kima Ventures and several business angels are also investing in the startup, including the founders of Bump, Electra, Elum Energy, Enspired and Greenly.

Several other companies that have been working on on-site battery management include GridBeyond in the U.K., Stabl in Germany and Stem in the U.S. As regulation varies from one region to another, Storio seems well positioned to tackle the French market and potentially other European countries in the future.

  • Google is getting ready to bring Pixel Studio to older Pixel phones

Google is getting ready to bring Pixel Studio to older Pixel phones

Google Pixel 9 Pro Pixel Studio options

    Ryan Haines / Android Authority

    TL;DR

    • Google could be preparing to bring the Pixel Studio app to the Pixel 8 series.
    • The app is currently exclusive to the Pixel 9 series.
    • The app uses on-device AI and Google’s Imagen 3 AI model to generate images from text prompts.

It looks like Google is preparing to roll out the Pixel Studio app on the Pixel 8, Pixel 8 Pro and Pixel 8a. Android Authority and Assemble Debug have found evidence suggesting that the Generative AI image creation app may be headed to the 2023 flagship lineup. It is currently exclusive to the Pixel 9 series and uses AI to generate images from text commands.

You’re reading an Authority Insights story on Android Authority. Discover Authority Insights for more exclusive reports, app teardowns, leaks, and in-depth tech coverage you won’t find anywhere else.

We found a new APK stub for Pixel Studio on APK Mirror. The notes on the website say it’s from the Pixel 8 Pro with the recent Android 15 update. After further investigation, we were able to confirm that the same APK stub was also pre-installed on the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8a with Android 15.

An APK stub looks just like the app it stands for and is signed with the same security keys. However, it’s essentially a placeholder that doesn’t contain any actual app content; instead, it simply directs users to the Play Store to download the full app. This allows device manufacturers to include apps without using much storage space. Google will have to allow the Play Store entry for Pixel Studio to let Pixel 8 series users officially download the app. So even though the APK stub is now present in the Android 15 update for the older Pixels, Google will have to turn on the switch at the backend for users to be able to get Pixel Studio.

Another piece of evidence we found was the removal of the com.google.android.feature.PIXEL_2024_EXPERIENCE feature flag from the app. This flag has been available in all previous Pixel Studio APKs. It is used for devices launched in 2024 (Essentially, the Pixel 9 series). Its removal indicates that Google is ready to roll out the Pixel Studio app to older devices.

This is also why sideloading a previous APK of the Pixel Studio app doesn’t work on the Pixel 8, 8 Pro, and 8a right now. Earlier versions of the APK include the flag that requires your Pixel device to be from 2024, i.e., a Pixel 9 series phone. So even if you sideload Pixel Studio right now, the APK will refuse to open if it cannot find that 2024 feature flag in the system, which obviously isn’t available in the Pixel 8 series.

Meanwhile, we checked, and it doesn’t look like the Pixel 7 series is in line to get the app right now. The APK stub was not available on the Pixel 7 running Android 15.

  • 5G-Advanced is coming to T-Mobile, and here’s what that means for you

5G-Advanced is coming to T-Mobile, and here’s what that means for you

    5G Preferred Network Setting

    Robert Triggs / Android Authority

    TL;DR

    • T-Mobile is preparing to add 5G-Advanced to its network, with plans to begin rolling it out before the end of 2024.
    • 5G-Advanced, also known as 5.5G, is a mid-cycle upgrade that promises faster speeds, improvements to Massive MIMO, high-precision finding, and energy efficiency.
    • You will likely need a new smartphone with the requisite hardware and licenses to enjoy the benefits of this mid-cycle network upgrade.

Nowadays, all Android flagships come with 5G support, and carriers have been ramping up their network to give customers the 5G advantage, especially in crowded urban areas. If 5G didn’t satisfy your need for network speed, we’re already staring at another network upgrade in the form of 5G-Advanced. The good news is that T-Mobile plans to bring 5G-Advanced to its network before the end of this year.

T-Mobile’s President of Technology, Ulf Ewaldsson, mentioned to Fierce Network that T-Mobile plans to deliver its 5G-Advanced-based service by the end of 2024. The service will offer features such as improved spectral efficiency and advanced positioning.

T-Mobile is said to be ahead on its 5G-Advanced plans because it has deployed a nationwide 5G standalone (5G SA) network instead of running a 5G RAN on a 4G LTE core, allowing it to roll out 5G-Advanced to its network as a software update. The report notes that AT&T started to deploy 5G standalone in late 2022, and Verizon has now launched standalone in several states in the US, but neither carrier has a nationwide 5G SA footprint yet.

    5G Advanced 3D Waves (1)

    Calvin Wankhede / Android Authority

5G-Advanced, also known as 5.5G and formally defined in 3GPP Release 18, is an upgrade to existing 5G networks. It promises faster speeds, improvements to Massive MIMO, high-precision finding, and energy efficiency by letting devices enter low-power states when idle.

Once the network comes online, smartphone OEMs and chip makers will start heavily touting 5G-Advanced capabilities in their smartphones. Not only does the modem need to support 5G-Advanced (most of Qualcomm’s recent releases, like the Snapdragon X75, X72, and X80 modems, support it), but the phone also needs to include the requisite RF antenna hardware and licenses to use 5G-Advanced.

The OPPO Find X7 series in China supports 5G-Advanced (5.5G) on China Mobile. We couldn’t locate reliable information for smartphones that already support this network in the US. We could likely see a new wave of 5G-Advanced-ready smartphones once the upcoming Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 possibly launches with the Snapdragon X80 modem. So, if you were hoping to enjoy 5.5G, you might need a new smartphone.
